Critical Citizens
If there must be trouble, let it be in my day, that my child may have peace.-- Thomas Paine

Why are these things happening?  Or what has happened that makes all this okay?

As the most powerful citizens of the world, it is our responsibility, to our children and to the other peoples of the world, that we understand the causes of important issues troubling our nation and the general direction that we are headed in.

There is nothing wrong with asking questions.  Please demand cogent and coherent explanations.  It is not safe to continue in total darkness.  There is still time to help good citizens and good leaders in government who are working hard to preserve our democracy.

As an American citizen, I claim my right under the first amendment to express my opinion (this site) and to engage my fellow citizens in a discussion of the materials presented here.

Note: Because of the fast-moving financial crisis in Europe and events here in the U.S., the decision was made to release this website in it's unfinished state. Please excuse the messiness as work continues. Thank you.

Personal Dignity: The TSA and Premptive Searching of the American Citizens' Body
Chivalry may be dead, but about an ordinary American's dignity? Routine public searches of a citizen's body are now an accepted part of life for the American traveler. If this is an acceptable indignity, is there a point when such actions become unacceptable? "It was embarrassing. It was demeaning..."

Surveillance: The Monitoring of the American Citizen
In the years since 9/11, the U.S. government and U.S. military agencies have developed unprecedented capabilities for monitoring American citizens, supposedly for their protection from malevolent actors. What sort of relationship is established when everything about you can be known? What boundaries can exist if there is nothing about you that cannot be found out?

Our Veterans and Soldiers: Changed, Damaged, Silent and Hurting
Our marines and soldiers make up the most formidable military in the world. Their training "wires" them to think of their mission first, then their buddies. Complaining about personal issues is burned out of many of them. Some of our military men are left vulnerable and unable to "find their feet" back in society. Some lose their empathy or humanity. How well are we taking care of those who are having difficulty coming home?

New Copyright Laws Clamp Down on Citizens' Ability to Inform Each Other
The Internet has allowed busy citizens to educate each other on issues of concern in their modern democracies. How is it that, during these troubled times, sweeping copyright laws are being considered to halt or limit the exchange of information so as to protect something as unimportant as entertainment content?

Genetically Modified Foods: Two Decades of Knowledge vs Millenia of Evolution
Genetically-modified materials are banned in many European countries for use in human food. The chief concern is the lack of proof that these materials are safe. How much testing has been done of these materials in the U.S.? Who does this testing? What biological and environmental impact do these modified organisms have on natural organisms?
